#nykstays: Grand Millennium Hongqiao, Shanghai, China

This is a review of my stay at Grand Millennium Hongqiao, Shanghai in April 2017. This is a standard business hotel, but the highlight is the food next door!

Room – Rating: 4/5

I had an Executive Club Room on the 9th floor that overlooks the small park behind the hotel. The view was okay, but I love playing with the remote controlled curtains :p

Love the remote controlled curtains!

Being a business-centric hotel, there was a huge writing desk in the room with a full range of stationery (pen, pencil, eraser, scissors, tape, glue etc.). This might be the most well-equipped business hotel I’ve stayed in. Other standard amenities such as flat screen TV and coffee making facilities were also available.

Amenities in the room

The bathroom came with both a standing shower and a tub. I did not use the tub during my stay, but the water pressure from the shower is great. Shampoo and shower gels are provided. Other toiletries can be obtained from the reception upon request.

Shower or bath? Your choice!

Service – Rating: 3.5/5

Service was okay, but not exceptional. Staff were cordial and efficient during both check-in and check-out, but there was minimal interaction with guests.

Food – Rating: N/A or 5/5 depending on how you see it!

Don’t bother paying for hotel breakfast if you’re staying in this hotel! There is a shopping mall next door where you can find lots of scrumptious Shanghainese delights.

One of the must-try from this mall is the 生煎包 (pan-fried dumplings with pork and shrimp fillings) from 小杨生煎 (Yang’s Dumplings). When it comes to Shanghainese dumplings, most people are more familiar with 小笼包. Well, you can think of 生煎包as giant 小笼包that are pan-fried. The skin of the dumpling is crispy on the outside, while the juice from the meat is completely retained within the walls of the chewy skin. If you are a 小笼包-lover, I am sure you will love 生煎包 too! Although the store at the mall is just a branch, I find the quality of the dumplings as good as the ones from the main store.

Facilities – Rating: 4/5

The gym is very well-equipped for a hotel gym but it was always empty when I was there. Also within the gym area are an indoor swimming pool (heated) and spa. However, the spa only provide massage service in the guest’s room which seemed a little dodgy to me.

More machines than humans

Location – Rating: 4/5

The hotel is located in Hongqiao, which is a 40-minute taxi ride away from Pudong International Airport. There is a subway station, Suicheng Road (Subway Line 10), that is a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Next to the hotel is a shopping mall (I didn’t take note of the name). There is a Carrefour supermarket, a 24-hour McDonald’s and tons of eateries in the mall which makes staying in this hotel very convenient.

If you are coming from the airport, the most convenient way to reach the hotel is by taxi. The ride to the hotel takes about 40 minutes and it should cost you RMB 180-200 depending on the traffic conditions.
